FA-Lexicon: Changes
Appointment with the doctor
Further chapters from „Changes“
Prepare your visit
Ideally, your specialist should know you and know that you have FA. If not, send them the relevant parts of the FARF Guidelines (Chapter 5: pages 95 & 96, Chapter 6: page 112 and following) before your appointment, and also bring a hard copy with you.
Bring your MSE-Documentations
Additionally, you should forward the PDF documentation materials of your Mouth Self-Examinations (MSE) from the FAexam app to him.
To download your documentation, navigate to the „Docs“ section and click on the download button in the top right corner.
Alternatively, you can download a specific individual documentation. To do this, swipe the selected one to the side and click on the download icon.
How does the examination
at the doctor’s office work?
At your specialist appointment, your doctor will carefully examine your oral cavity and tongue and tell you if they think it is necessary to perform further evaluation via a brush biopsy or a scalpel biopsy.
A brush biopsy is a very simple and non-invasive method that is particularly useful for people with FA. Basically, it’s like a miniature toothbrush that is spun over the spot a few times to harvest the cells, which are then analyzed in the lab.
Early prevention using brush biopsy
A long-term and large study with more than 700 FA patients has shown that the brush biopsy is a very safe method to better characterize these early (and mostly harmless) changes in cells of the oral mucosa.
This gives you and your dentist a lot more clarity and security in using the brush biopsy to assess early changes.
